Getting the Right Haircut

Have you ever wondered why when you go to get your haircut it seems as though the hairstylist never quite cuts your hair the same way each time? If this has happened to you more times than not, then let me explain.

There are many things to take into factor; One of which, are you visiting the same stylist every time? Are you a fairly new client? Are you getting regular haircuts? What is the weather like outside is it hot, humid, cold, wet or dry? Is your stylist in a more creative mood than the last time? Does your hairstylist have a good memory? Are you explaining your haircut with the correct terms? Is the stylist fully understanding what you want?(Taper)

The easiest way to explain is this is to explain how hair grows first. Hair generally grows about a 1/2" a month. Hair also does not grow evenly all over the head. Some areas on the head grow faster than others plus hair is finer & thinner in some areas of the head than others.

What does this all mean when it comes to getting your haircut? Well... let's say you get your haircut every 4 weeks and then you get busy and didn't go again till 7 weeks. Your hair has grown out an extra 3 weeks and the shape of the hair has dramatically changed, depending on how fast your hair grows. Each week you go longer than the previous appointment makes finding the previous lines of the haircut harder. Plus if your going to a new stylist you have only been to a few times they may not remember you or your haircut so it is very important to be able to find these lines.(Taper)

The weather can affect that too. If one time you go and it's cold outside and the next time you go it's humid out then your haircut may look different. It may appear shorter or longer than normal or the texture can appear to be different. So when your stylist goes to cut your hair, their creative eye sees something different and may cut your hair slightly different to accommodate the change.

What about the stylist? If your stylist does not have a good memory than it may take a few times of doing your hair to remember you and your haircut. Is this a bad thing? No, just make sure you explain it the same way each time until you are sure they remember your haircut or have them take a few pictures with your phone to help you both remember.

What about your stylist being in a more creative mood? Maybe your stylist went to a new hair cutting class and has learned a new technique. Based on what your hair is doing that day, the stylist may decide to utilize one of these techniques. If that technique worked for your hair than make sure you tell them the next time you go. They may not remember they did that the last time and if your hair is doing something different than it was the time before they may not remember on their own.

Being able to explain what you want with the right terms: Let's say you are having trouble finding the words to describe what you want. Please do not use terms you are not sure of or do not truly describe what you are looking for. This can cause huge misunderstandings and you may get something you did not want. There are better ways to get what you are looking for. One way is to bring in pictures, if you find multiple pics but you only like one thing in each pic that's OK. (example: you like the bangs in this pic but the layers in another and the highlights in another) This helps your stylist out tremendously!

Have you ever found yourself not knowing what you want at all; no pics and no words to describe what you want? This can be very frustrating for both you and the hairstylist. Here is what to do in this situation: Find pics of things you DO NOT like and describe the things you have had in the past that you DID NOT like. By doing this, you and the stylist can create something you DO like based on what you don't like.

Stylist are creative beings therefore, they do not perform like robots. Their creative eye's prevents them from seeing the same thing the same way every time. They need your help to create the perfect look for you.

Short Haircuts

A short haircut does not imply one specific cut, because the lengths of different short haircuts vary. To make it simpler one can divide the lengths into three different categories, namely: super short, jaw length and chin length fashions. Short haircuts are versatile and with some added color you can sport a chic and feminine hairstyle.(Taper)

When contemplating a super short haircut you have to be very certain before you decide to take the leap. A great tip is to pull your hair back and envision what you would look like with shorter hair. Generally oval facial shapes carry this style very well, however if your face is too long, wide or round you should opt for a longer short haircut. A super short haircut is refreshingly manageable, a wash and go style if you will. These cuts are not for the faint of heart though, due to them being the shortest, but with ample self-confidence this style can be pulled off superbly. Layers in varying lengths add a hint of volume. You can have textured pixie bangs or leave them a bit longer and style them at any angle.(Taper)

A Jaw length short haircut is typically characterized by the fact that it's longer on the sides with layers and bangs. This cut will be perfect if you have fine hair, as it will make it look fuller with more volume. If you have a diamond face shape -- avoid this length, as it will accentuate the jaw line. This cut is so versatile; because you can have different side partings, curl your hair, add pieced strands, use a straightening iron and a whole lot more.

The chin length haircut is ideal for anyone and this is probably the most versatile short hairstyle. Lengths for this style vary and may be cut into layers, kept at one length or graduated. Bangs look superb and finish off the hairstyle with a feminine softness and they can be any length. Experiment with different looks, for instance: tucking your hair behind your ears with a sleek finish, using a curling iron to achieve romantic locks or by adding some hair accessories etc.

It is certainly a huge step for anyone to cut their long hair, thankfully we've evolved and new software can provide you with a preview of your new shorter style. If you like specific haircuts gather similar pictures and explain to your stylist what you want and ask for their advice, after all they studied cosmetology and are trained in this field. Make sure that the salon you choose has good references and you feel comfortable with your choice and stylist.

Taking care of your hair should be your first priority. Treat and moisturize your hair on a weekly basis and avoid using too much heat on your hair. These days you can achieve great styles with various techniques, but it's a lot easier to accomplish with an investment in some great quality styling tools. Short haircuts are making a comeback with a chic selection that is fashionable and versatile.

How To Choose A Stylish Haircut?

You may aspire to have your hair styled like your favorite celebrity, or have it cut like your best friends. However, your stylish hair cut turns out not the way you had imagined. Instead of looking great, you end up with an old, ugly, fat, or downright nasty look. How can a hairstyle that has managed to look great on your friend, or in a photograph, turn out so wrong for you?

The answer lies in the shape of your face. Granted, some of us have been blessed with features that would literally fit any stylish haircut. The rest of us though, need to be aware about the types of haircuts that would accentuate our features, and other styles we need to avoid.(Taper)

Typically, face shapes fall in the following categories - oval shape, long, round, diamond and square. If you have an oval shape or a diamond shape, pretty much any hairstyle would suit you. So, how can you tell if you have a face like that?

Well, it's pretty simple. An oval shape would have a length that is 1.5 times the width of the face. You would have a diamond shape face if your chin and forehead are narrow, with cheeks that are almost of equal length. With a diamond shape face, you need stylish haircuts that would show off your cheekbones. Wisps close to the side of your face would be great for you.

Now, as for the rest of you.....

Your face is classified under the long or oblong category if the length is more than 1.5 times the width of your face Your aim then is not to have your hairstyle make your face look longer than it already is. To do this, short stylish haircuts, or even bob hairstyles with bangs are suitable. Look for haircuts that give your hair more body especially at the sides. Long straight styles should be avoided.

Round shape faces tend to look plump and fat. You'd have a round face if the length of is about the same as the width. Thus, you need long straight or long layered styles to make your face look longer. Short stylish haircuts need to be avoided, or you'll end up looking fatter than you really are!(Taper)

If you have a square shape face, this means that you have a wide forehead and a wide chin. Stylish haircuts that are perfect for square faces would be one with layers especially at the cheek areas. Center parting hairstyles without bangs are also great for this type.

Finally, with what you know now, you'll be wiser with your hair decisions in the future. This time, you don't need your best friend's or your favorite celebrity's stylish haircuts to look good. You can look absolutely beautiful just by being you!

Long Layered Haircuts - A Cut For Everyone

Let us be very honest. We are all a little envious of those who have beautiful long hair. Anybody can maintain a short bob cut or any other short haircut. However, long hair is harder to maintain, or so we think. In reality, unlike short hair, long layered haircuts suits all kind of facial shapes and can be maintained with the same amount of care that goes into short hair.(Taper)

For long hair haircut with layers give the face a soft and feminine look. We often think of long layered hairs as a specific single style. In reality, the long layered haircuts come in many styles like the long face framing layers, choppy layers, layers with blunt bangs, layers with side-swept bangs, curly long layers, layered bobs etc. Depending on the shape of the face, you can choose any type of layered haircuts that suit you.

Hairstylists categorize faces into eight basic shapes and apply the long layered haircuts accordingly. Oval shaped faces are considered the most versatile of facial shapes because it complements a multiple array of long layered haircuts. Rather the only cut to avoid is having too many layers on top of the head, which makes the face look longer or gaunt.

However, this is exactly what women with round faces need, to add some length to their face. Haircuts with layers that fall just below the chin take away the roundness of the face from the sides as well, giving it a more oval shape.(taper)

For women with long and narrow rectangular faces, the haircuts with layered hair can shorten the faces' length and add roundness to the otherwise narrow shape. Hairstylists suggest long hair, with layers at short intervals and bangs and a side part. With this face shape though hair shouldn't be cut too short or too long.

Faces with narrow forehead and wide chin are labeled pear-shaped. Opposite of the heart shaped face, women with pear shaped face need to add width to their forehead and hide the wideness of their chin. Get long layered haircuts that leave you with layers falling along the chin. Brush hair off the forehead and wear it loosely to give some volume on top and around the forehead.

Diamonds may be a girl's best friend, but a diamond shaped face can also shine the same way with the right long layered haircuts. Wear long layered hair brushed away from forehead or loose around the top to give width to it. Layers should fall in wisps around the wide chin to hide its width.

Women with square faces often want to take away the edges and bring some roundness to it. Long layered haircuts with wispy medium bangs falling around the jaw line usually add that softness and feminine curve to the face. Layers should not be allowed to grow chin length or longer in this case.

Hairstyles are all about hiding the drawbacks and enhancing the advantages. Women with heart shaped faces want to take the attention away from their wider forehead and add volume to their jaw line. Soft long hair with layers sweeping across the cheekbone will be able to do that. Avoid blunt or uneven layers with this face shape.

Long layered haircuts can be worn up, in a ponytail, or in various styles. Moreover, long layered haircuts can be given different looks at home using curling irons or hairs strengtheners. Currently, there are various stylizing products that can be used to give volume or curls to your hair for a temporary style using the long layered hair cut as basis.

With a square face you might want to consider bangs that are short and straight. Do not cut the hair too short, and consider adding length to the sides and back with layers to add volume to the face. Some of the trendy spiky cuts, or a cut with curls on the ends can be flattering for this face.

The heart face looks best with hair beneath the jaw line. Do not use layers or short cuts with this structure. Side swept bangs can help reduce the emphasis of the pointed chin.

A long shaped face looks best with bangs all the way to the eyebrows. Curls and side layering without much volume on top will help to shorten the face(taper).

Along with your facial structure, you must also decide the general feel you want for your hair. Will you need a more formal or informal look? The way you live and work can help you decide. An oval shaped face can be quite easy to flatter. This shape has many choices available. Most guides suggest you keep the hair an even length with no layers or high volume. Wispy bangs are also an option. This shape is so versatile that almost any style will work if you make sure to highlight your best features.

The round shaped face seems to be the most problematic facial structure to flatter. However, it does not have to be; there are choices for this structure as well. A common guideline with experts in this shape is to try to minimize the fullness of the face. Layers on any length hair can help accomplish this. Keeping the hair off the face so that your eyes and cheekbones are emphasized is also advised. Keeping a cut just below the chin or incorporating tapered ends can also be flattering.

Short, straight bangs are often a good choice for those with a square face. Do not have a cut that is too short. Lengthening(taper) the back and sides with layers will add volume. Having curls on the ends, or getting a trendy spiky cut also look flattering on this shape.

Having the hair fall below the jaw line works well to flatter the heart shaped face. Short cuts and layers are usually discouraged. Bangs swept to the side will help take the emphasis away from the point of the chin.

A long face can be complimented by having the bangs go all the way to the tip of the eyebrows. Curls and layering the sides without too much volume will help to shorten the face.

In addition to your facial structure, you should also consider your lifestyle when choosing a cut. Are you most often in formal situations, or is casual the way you normally live? When preparing for a special event like a wedding function or prom, consider trying a formal look. However, even informal styles can work for these occasions. Just make sure it flatters your dress style.

Your stylist can be an excellent resource when deciding on your best style. If however, you do not like any of her suggestions, do not feel obligated to go with her choice. You know what will be most comfortable for you. Consider using an Internet site that allows you to virtually look at various styles. Some have your facial structure and others allow you to download a photograph. This can help you decide if the look is appropriate for you.

Deciding the hair cuts and styles that work best for you is a personal decision. As long as you like the look, it does not matter what the experts say. If you should make a bad choice, it can always be changed when the cut grows out.
